How Residential Energy Efficiency Saves Money

Residential energy efficiency is one of the most discussed topics at government level, in the media, and even in groups of ordinary people. Although the contribution which each individual household can make to saving the planet is only a small one, when the cumulative effect of many thousands of homes is added up, it will be highly significant. When you think than you to will save money through making the simple adjustments which can save you energy, there is no reason not to do so.

The greatest savings in residential energy can come if efficiency is planned into the building right from the start. In new constructions, there are standards laid down as to the materials which can be used, and the specifications they must have. This is especially true of the materials used in roofing and in the construction of windows, which are areas where heat can easily escape into the outside atmosphere. Modern windows made from Low-E glass are far more effective at reflecting heat back into the room, saving you power and money. Living in a newly built home will give you the best chance of being as energy efficient as possible without the need to carry out expensive renovations yourself.

There is no reason, of course, why you cannot upgrade to better materials even if you are living in an older home. You will have to oversee the project yourself and appoint your own contractors, but this should not be difficult to do. If you are using materials of the same standard as those used in new constructions, you will qualify for tax incentives which can make the project cheaper. Even so, there are practical considerations of whether or not you could recoup your investment if you sold the property. You are far more likely to be able to do this if the property is well located and in good condition.

energy efficent appliances

Once the structure of the property has either been built or renovated, residential energy efficiency can be improved still further by using the most energy efficient appliances. The appliances which use the most power, such as the heating system, are the most important to get right, but you would be surprised how much money you can save by something as simple as changing your light bulbs over to fluorescent low energy bulbs. These typically use a fifth of the power of the equivalent incandescent bulb, and the last for far longer before they need replacing.

If you want to take efficiency and caring for the environment to a whole new level, you can even become one of the pioneers of new energy generation. The technology of solar energy is one which the human race will need to embrace and develop in the years to come if the quality of life is going to be maintained and then raised. At the moment, solar photovoltaic panels are still very much in the development stage, but they can still be cost effective for some households. There are incentives available to help you implement this technology.

The first step in implementing a residential energy efficiency program is to make sure that your home is structured properly and that the materials used are at least adequate for insulation. If they are not, you can always add extra layers of insulating material to bolster them. Once the house itself is sound, you can begin working on the appliances inside, and you can make significant savings just with some simple and cheap modifications. Don't be tempted to go without just to save power, but do make sure that the appliances you buy are the most efficient for the price. You can save a lot of money by concentrating on residential energy efficiency.
